Join the CAF Air Group One

Does your pulse run a little faster when you see exhaust stacks belch thick, blue smoke as a big reciprocating engine of a B-17 "Sentimental Journey" comes to life with a throaty roar? Have you ever dreamed of getting closer to those last few famous operational World War II aircraft that you see distantly at airshows or in TV documentaries? Or perhaps you'd like to help preserve "Warbirds" and promote the legacy of their historic accomplishments, before they're gone forever? Make this vision a reality now. After all, if you hesitate a few more years until you have the time or money to join the "Warbird" movement, it may be too late. The operational aircraft may no longer be ready when you are. Don't let the opportunity pass you by. Go for the gusto.

Air Group One welcomes new members and wants to give you the opportunity to join the tax-exempt CAF and its local San Diego Wing, Air Group One. Learn more about the CAF San Diego Wing, Air Group One, and how you can become a member. Your check or charge card is accepted.

The CAF is celebrating its 44th anniversary as the world's largest nonprofit museum of operational World War II aircraft, now totaling more than 120 examples. These aircraft are operated and maintained by CAF units throughout the world.

One of those units, is our San Diego Wing, Air Group One, headquartered at their hangar on Gillespie Field at 1860 Joe Crosson Drive in El Cajon, CA 92020. The Air Group One fleet now includes an L-5 and a newly restored SNJ.

Air Group One holds its general meetings each Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m. and the museum/hangar is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Our current Air Group One Colonels (every CAF member is a "Colonel") are from areas throughout San Diego county. They range in ages from 20 to 90, and come from all walks of life. A few are pilots, but the majority are nonrated men and women who have a love of good fellowship and World War II aviation history. If you have an interest, there are no special requirements to become a CAF member. Activities are varied, and you can select among them as your time and other activities permit.

Air Group One publishes a monthly newsletter, called the "Scuttlebutt" and would be happy to send you a copy. Members assist with the museum operation and maintenance, fly aircraft, perform aircraft maintenance, work in the gift shop, operate a PX trailer, participate in airshows, participate in parades, present special events, and educate the public on the role of airpower in preserving America’s liberty during World War II.

Upcoming events are published in our newsletter. We recognize that you may hold a full-time job, have a family and other commitments. We encourage our members to be active, but don’t lean on them except, of course, for the “biggies” such as “Wings Over Gillespie.”

Air Group One is growing fast. We need new members to help us with new projects, special events, and especially for the operations of the new CAF Air Group One museum and hangar. Plans include a special area in the museum for a children's hands-on education center, World War II collections of books, videos, paintings, authentic uniforms, and memorabilia, etc.

For updates on our special events call our special events INFOLINE 1-888-215-7000.
Tickets for all events may be purchased by calling the museum (619) 448-4505.

Don’t let the opportunity pass you by to join Air Group One. For additional questions or comments please email us.
